I’m sitting in my house on a Sunday morning. I’m reading the papers. I’m drinking coffee. I’m staying close to my dogs, Josephine and Tootie. It’s all part of my Sunday morning ritual.

One thing I’m looking forward to and dreading is the World Cup final this afternoon between Argentina and Spain. Looking forward to it because I’m just excited to see the game. Or, is it a match? Dreading it because I just don’t want this to end.

Let me say this right now. For the most part, I really have no idea what I am watching. I don’t understand the rules. I don’t understand the terms. I certainly don’t understand why when a game is over, they suddenly add more time.

I’m not into sports either. I watch the Super Bowl for the halftime show. I can’t tell you the last time I went to a game of any kind.

All that said, I’m a little obsessed with the World Cup. Whenever there is a game on at my house, I watch it. I’ve lost precious nap time because of it.

James Poniewozik writes in Today’s New York Times pretty much the same thing. He says he’s not a sports guy either. He writes though that the World Cup has been a “compelling distraction at the perfect time.” He writes of how the World Cup has provided “cool vibes.”

Maybe that’s it. The cool vibes. I have watched fans from all over the world come to America and celebrate their countries. I have watched them experience our country in ways we take for granted.

They found an oversized gas station named Buc-ee’s. They found supersized jars of mayonnaise at Walmart. They discovered Ranch Dressing.

Hidden Valley is not being quiet about this either. The full page ad in the Times says, “Thank you to our fans, near and far, new and old. The flavor of America.” Then, the picture of a giant bottle of Hidden Valley Ranch. Even I am eating Ranch dressing again. Putting it on everything!

So, this afternoon, I’ll be watching Argentina and Spain go at it. I have no skin in this game. I really don’t care who wins. I really don’t care if Messi gets his record back for all time World Cup goal scoring.

What I care about are all those cool vibes. It seems like all the mess we are in has been a little quieter these last few weeks. Yes, the troubles of the world are still there, but we’ve had something nice to distract us.

Thank you World Cup. I’m gonna miss you. Now, what will I watch tomorrow?

Probably, “Law and Order” reruns. The classic ones with Jerry Orbach and Sam Waterston. My DVR is full of them.
